What is Soundflower software?

Soundflower software
Apple Soundflower is an open source kernel extension for MacOS, designed to create a virtual audio output device that can also act as an input. Soundflower was developed by Max Schneider and Evan Brooks, two alumni of the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. The idea behind Soundflower was simple: provide a means for audio applications to share audio streams between each other, without the need for complex routing setups.
The Soundflower extension is available as a free download from the Apple App Store, and can be installed on any Mac running OS X 10.6 or later. After installation, Soundflower appears as an additional output device in the Sound panel of System Preferences. Soundflower can be used to route any audio stream to an application or device of your choice, making it a handy tool for podcasting, live streaming and other audio production tasks.
Soundflower is also useful for creating a virtual audio input device. This can be used to record the output of an application or device, allowing you to utilize Soundflower as a virtual audio input device. Soundflower provides two channels (outputs) and one input, allowing you to record up to three separate streams simultaneously. While Soundflower can’t compete with dedicated recording applications like Logic or ProTools, it has the advantage of being free and easy to use.
Soundflower is designed to be used in conjunction with other audio applications. Soundflower is not a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) in its own right, although you can use it to record application output in real time. However, Soundflower is really designed to be used for recording system sounds and live streaming output.
